Johnson & Wales is pleased to announce a transformation of printing. During the summer, a new print distribution system was installed. Computer labs and libraries at all campuses have been updated with new print stations. Once you send a document to print from a university computer, these print stations allow you to walk up, swipe your university ID card and select the documents you would like to print.
There are several benefits that will be enjoyed from this system:
- Flexible printing options - Students, staff and faculty can print a document from any computer lab or library computer and pick it up at any print station for up to four hours. This gives them the flexibility to print multiple documents and pick them up when it is convenient. All they need is a valid university ID card.
- Secure printing – Previously, document could be viewed by lab staff or others after it was printed to a centralized printer. Now each person is in control of the documents they print while at the printer ensuring that they are the only person who will be viewing their printed document.
- Eco-friendly green printing –With the new system no header pages are printed as they had been in the past. Also, you only print out the document that you really want as opposed to printing multiple documents that end up in recycle bins.
- Alumni and university guest usage – JWU Alumni and university guests will be able to use the print stations as well. To get started they will be required to check out a guest card from the attendant. Alumni will also be required to have a JWU alumni user account. See http://helpdesk.jwu.edu/alum_labs.htm for additional information.
Below are suggestions we are offering to students to ensure their success with the system. Staff and faculty should be aware of these suggestions as well when printing from the computer labs or libraries:
- Use your own user name and password – Be sure to logon with your user name and password when using a library or lab computer. If the computer is already logged on with someone else’s user name you should log that user off. All print jobs will be associated with the user name that is logged on. If you sit at a computer that is logged on as a different user you will not be able to pick up your print jobs that you send during that session. By ensuring you are using your own user name and password you will also protect the security of your documents.
- Take care of your university ID card – There is a magnetic stripe on the back of your university ID card. This stripe is used to match your print documents to you. If your card is not taken care of the magnetic stripe can be damaged. The university charges for ID card replacements.
- Print your documents within 4 hours – Print jobs will only be available for 4 hours after you select print from a computer lab or library. Be sure to visit any print release station within 4 hours if you would like a paper copy of your document. After 4 hours the pending print job will no longer be available.
- Free printing – The university currently offers free printing in all computer labs and libraries for students.
