On-Campus Network - ResNet: Charlotte

Accessing ResNet To access the University's Residential Network with your personal computer, you must have a network card and a network cable. Locate the network wall plate and plug your computer's network cable into the network plug.

In some rooms there may be more networking devices requiring network connectivity than there are jacks in the room. You can solve this problem with an Ethernet hub or a switch, which are special devices that allow several networking devices to share a single data network jack.

Please note: personal wireless access points are not allowed in dorm rooms via the wall jack connection due to the security risk. Please call the University Help Desk with any questions.

It is necessary to make some adjustments to your computer in order to access ResNet. If you have an operating system other than Windows XP or you are having difficulty locating your data drop, please contact the University Help Desk for assistance.

 

clean access - J&W has implemented a new network authentication and validation security system called Clean Access to prevent infected computers from accessing the network and infecting other computers. This will ensure a safe, secure and reliable network for you.

What Clean Access does:

The first time you connect your computer to a live data jack in your room and launch your browser, you will be redirected to a page for downloading the Clean Access Agent. Once Clean Access is installed, you will not be redirected to this page again. Instead, every time Windows is restarted, the Clean Access Agent will present you with a pop-up to log into the University network using your J&W email ID and password.

(Note: If the Clean Access Agent does not automatically download when you launch your browser, you can manually download the Cisco Clean Access Agent)

Upon successful authentication, the Clean Access Agent will check your computer to make sure it passes the following requirements:

If your computer passes these requirements, you will be granted access to the network. If your computer does not meet these requirements, you will be granted temporary access to specific Web sites where you can fulfill the requirements and/or instructions on how to get them from related websites. Once your computer passes all of the requirements, you will be able to access all network services and the Internet.

  1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.
  2. Click Network and Internet Connections and then Network Connections.
  3. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties.
  4. Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option and then click Properties.
  5. Make sure the following settings are selected:
    • Obtain an IP address automatically.
    • Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  6. Click the "Advanced" button.
  7. Click the DNS tab and ensure the settings are:
    • DNS Server Address: Blank.
    • Select "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes."
    • Check "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix."
    • Check "Register this connection's address in DNS."
  8. Click the WINS tab and ensure the settings are:
    • WINS address box: Blank.
    • Check "Enable LMHOSTS lookup."
    • Select "Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server."
  9. Click OK to Advanced TCP/IP settings.
  10. Click OK to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties.
  11. Click OK to Local Area Connection Properties.
  12. Close the Network and Dial-Up Connections box.

  1. Right Click on the Start button and select properties then switch to classic view.
  2. Click on Start and then Settings and then Network Connections
  3. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties.
  4. Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP Version 4) option and then click Properties.
  5. Make sure the following settings are selected:
    1. Obtain an IP address automatically.
    2. Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  6. Click the "Advanced" button.
  7. Click the DNS tab and ensure the settings are:
    1. DNS Server Address: Blank.
    2. Select "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes."
    3. Check "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix."
    4. Check "Register this connection's address in DNS."
  8. Click the WINS tab and ensure the settings are:
    1. WINS address box: Blank.
    2. Check "Enable LMHOSTS lookup."
    3. Select "Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server."
  9. Click OK to Advanced TCP/IP settings.
  10. Click OK to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties.
  11. Click Close to Local Area Connection Properties.
  12. Close the Network Connections box.
